Snack of the Day: Red Carpet Corn from Executive Pastry Chef Zac Young

Behind the Burner: Snack of the Day: Red Carpet Corn from Executive Pastry Chef Zac Young

When awards season starts up, the best thing to have on hand is a unique snack, guaranteed to win over your taste buds (and any party crashing friends). Instead of the usual beer-friendly cocktail weenies, reach for some crunchy, savory, yet sweet Red Carpet Corn created by Flex Mussels Executive Pastry Chef Zac Young.

Already known for his tasty pop-up doughnut shop in Grand Central Station, Young has gone above & beyond to create a phenomenal recipe (for those of you into that whole "bacon trend"...which I am) for a caramel saturated munchable that is star worthy.

Starting with brown sugar & working into the mix cashews, peanuts, bacon fat & bacon pieces, one can't help but enjoy each chewy, crunchy bite. And, if you're like me, you'll probably be stashing some extra (if there is any) in your desk drawer for some discreet office indulgence after the fact.

Tip: Make sure when you're pouring the caramel over the popcorn to watch the heck out because it is H-O-T hot hot hot! Wait for it all to cool down before consuming, it'll be worth it!

Snack of the Day: Cherry Bomb Skinny Mix by Danielle Schupp

Behind the Burner: Snack of the Day: Cherry Bomb Skinny Mix by Danielle Schupp

Whether you're on the go with no time to sit, staring blankly at your computer during that 4 o'clock lull, or just watching tv, trail mix is the perfect snack to have on hand. When made with wholesome, natural ingredients, trail mix is sweet, salty, and satisfying. Of course you can sometimes have too much of a good thing (trail mix is high in both fat and calories), but with Skinny Mix created by Danielle Schupp (author of Urban Skinny and prominent New York based dietician) you don't have to worry about going off the deep end because each package is premeasured to be only 200 calories. In just 200 calories, you're consuming "functional foods" that are high in fiber, protein, and heart healthy fats.

Recently I tried Danielle's Cherry Bomb, a delicious combo of coco covered almonds, dried cherries, and pieces of dark chocolate. As far as trail mix goes, this particular Skinny Mix is more on the sweet side, but it was the perfect afternoon snack that curbed my desire to indulge in something that would have made me guilty later.

Tip: Another great variety of Danielle Schupp's Skinny Mix is Peanut Butter and Jelly.

Snack of the Day: Snikiddy Baked Fries

Behind the Burner: Snack of the Day: Snikiddy Baked Fries

When people think French fries, they usually think of a great, dripping, greasy plate of fried goodness from a local dive (or if you're lucky, some lightly fried taters with truffle salt from your favorite nice restaurant). Each bite is sublimely artery clogging, yet delicious, but there is a different way to get that delicious fried potato taste without raising your cholesterol.

Snikiddy is an all-natural, baked French Fry similar to chips. Made preservative, gluten and wheat free, they have 50% less fat than regular potato chips (and god knows how much less than your usual plate of sickeningly shiny spuds). They come in flavors such as Classic Ketchup, Bold Buffalo and, our personal favorite, Southwest Cheddar, that are sure to please all ages. They certainly please the Behind the Burner staff, who have been casually coming by my desk to grab handfuls as a snack!

Tip: Substitute your usual fries for these babies with your nightly burger and feel less guilty about enjoying the potatoey goodness!
