There's No Food Like Home: Peter's Since 1969
With cuisines from all over the world on every corner in New York City, the possibilities are endless. Thai, Ethiopian, French, Argentinian. There isn’t a country not represented on the food scene in New York. But with so many international options, it can be easy to forget about good ol’ American cooking. Whatever happened to mom’s homemade mashed potatoes and meatloaf? After a recent dining experience at Peter's Since 1969 in Brooklyn, I made a nostalgic and delicious journey back to some real, down-home American comfort food.
Set on the happening Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, Peter’s Since stands in refreshing contrast to the hipster scene. The restaurant is in a restored butcher shop, once owned by Peter Kuper (hence, the name). The tiled walls, metal racks and hardwood floors are all authentic. The enamel door to the once-refrigerator still remains and forms the entrance to the kitchen.
At Peter’s, guests order from a standard menu (1 main dish and 2 sides), receive their food and seat themselves. It is very casual, but also very cozy. Red Le Creuset pots warm all of the food, so it feels as if your own mother is dishing out dinner from the stove-top. Beer is served in mason jars, and sangria in copper tin mugs. All these little accents created a one-of-a-kind dining atmosphere. Unlike fast food places with no personality, Peter’s manages to serve up great food in a casual yet characteristic way.
But does the food live up to the charming ambiance? One bite of the meatloaf or the rotisserie chicken, and you will instantly transport back to homemade Sunday dinners. Peter’s is known for its rotisserie chicken, which is golden and crispy on the outside and wonderfully flavorful on the inside. Another star on the menu is the meatloaf, which is super moist and has a much more complex flavor profile than typically dry, dense meatloaf. The short ribs literally fell off the bone. Cooked for hours, the caramelization of the marinade creates a sweet crust, which pairs beautifully with Peter's homemade BBQ sauce.
The side dishes at Peter’s are also not to be missed. The mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and mac & cheese all had classic flavor and texture. The green beans and rotisserie vegetables also offer a tasty "lighter" alternative. Corn muffins with real corn kernels inside add a gourmet touch to the ones I usually cook from the box.
After an evening filled with delicious food and friendly conversation, I was also filled with memories of home and family meals. If you are ever feeling homesick or are just in the mood for some real American comfort food, be sure to dine at Peter's Since 1969. You will not be disappointed.
