Haute Cuisine at Café Un Deux Trois

Since my first French class in seventh grade, I’ve always been attracted to French culture. Food, wine, fashion, history— the French just seem to have it all, and they know it, too. For anyone not born in France, this trademark French arrogance can be a major turn–off to their cuisine and culture. But at Café Un Deux Trois, you will experience all of that French je ne sais quoi, without the French hospitality (or lack thereof).

The restaurant itself is a quiet, romantic spot— a nice relief from the hustle and bustle of the theater district right outside. Dark wood floors and walls, old school chandeliers, and colorful stained glass behind the bar create a sexy French brasserie vibe à la 1920s.

The service is attentive and quick, without feeling rushed. This is a great spot for a quick pre-theater dinner, or a more relaxed evening of wine and some signature French dishes, such as Escargots de Bourgogne (snails in garlic butter), or Moules Marinières (mussels steamed in white wine).

Now that the temperature is starting to drop and there’s that fall chill in the air, the Boeuf Bourguignon is a wonderful hearty and traditional French meal to enjoy. This dish of tender stewed beef tips in a red wine sauce with mushrooms and potatoes tastes so authentically homemade and French that you’ll swear you’re eating in a bistro along the Seine.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a French meal without dessert. Café Un Deux Trois serves up all the classics: Crêpes Suzette (homemade crepes filled with orange cream, flambeed in a Grand Marnier sauce) and Crème Brûlée. But the Profiteroles are the absolute pièce de résistance. Three puff pastry rounds, filled with vanilla ice cream, topped with warm Belgian chocolate sauce and toasted almonds. You will want to lick every last bit off your plate.

Amidst the chaos and touristy joints of the theater district, Café Un Deux Trois is an authentic taste of French cuisine and style. Luckily, the one thing that doesn’t ring true to French culture is the hospitable service!
