Guac Talk at Dos Toros Taqueria
Let's talk guac. Now, I wouldn't say I'm a guacamole expert as much as I'm just a guacamole snob (which I totally admit and accept). So don't try to fool me with prepackaged green junk from a container or bag, because I'll know before it even hits the table, and when that happens it's not a pretty sight. Now that my feisty feelings are out in the open, I'd like to discuss Dos Toros Taqueria, where guacamole not only lives up to my snobby standards, but surpasses them with a little bit of shock and utter joy.
Located in the heart of the West Village, Dos Toros Taqueria fits in perfectly with the slew of charming restaurants, but stands out with its refined, recycled and rather airy decor. The front of the restaurant is wide open, allowing the seductive scents and mood-appropriate Mexican music to pour out onto the sidewalk. As a restaurant regularly compared to Chipotle, Dos Toros definitely wins in the decor department. All of the tables and chairs are made from sustainable or reclaimed wood, giving the restaurant a warm, inviting feel that makes you want to sit down and share a burrito with a friend (or random person off the street, your call). The food construction counter is short and not at all intimidating, keeping my ordering-stage fright and unintentional incorrect orders to a minimum. And last but not least, the counter facing the open window is perfect for my favorite after-work activity, people watching.
I decided to order a Pollo Asado Plato, which is essentially a burrito minus the tortilla. Talk about quantity. Black beans coated the bottom of the plate followed by perfectly seasoned, juicy chicken. Reminiscent of my mother's arroz con pollo, the Spanish-influenced rice was definitely one of the stars of the dish, adding flavor and texture that took my plato to new heights. After adding salsa, hot sauce and cheese, I made my smartest decision of the day: guacamole. And following my smartest decision of the day, I made my second smartest of the day: extra guacamole. For only 92 cents, the chunky yet smooth, subtly salty, sweet but tangy guac finishes off the plato as an absurdly delicious addition. And just as suggested, I grabbed a bag of chips to turn my meal into an impromptu nacho dish. It's been nice knowing you, Chipotle; but I'm officially a Dos Toros girl now.
