Beauty in Every Bite: 5 Foods Your Reflection Craves
If looks can kill, food is definitely a threat. Skip the overpriced makeup aisle at the drug store, and hit your local supermarket to stock up on some natural foods that will do a body (and hair, and skin, and face) good.
1. EVOO
Extra virgin olive oil that does more than dress up a Caprese salad or serve as the perfect bread dip. A recent article in Every Day Health says that olive oil creates a barrier that prevents dry skin and is beneficial to those with eczema. Just rub it on your body as an after shower lotion to take advantage of its dual purpose.
2. Strawberries
They may not lead to strawberry-blonde hair, but strawberries are well known to ward off wrinkles. And sink your teeth in this: strawberry juice is also said to loosen plaque in your teeth, serving as a natural whitener. This organic blogger even provides a recipe to her own natural berry teeth cleanser.
3. Avocados
It's no secret by now that us folks at Behind the Burner are huge fans of avocados. But these creamy green fruits are proven to be more than just a heart-healthy super food. Avocado contains high amounts of vitamin B, which helps nourish skin, while niacin (also known as vitamin B3), soothes irritated skin and can help calm down blotchy, red skin. Aloe's new best friend? I think so.
4. Low fat yogurt (We prefer to go Greek!)
Calcium is always necessary for a beautiful skin, healthy teeth and strong bones. One cup of low fat yogurt has 450 milligrams of calcium, according to Doctor Lisa Drayer's, the The Beauty Diet. That's more calcium than a glass of low fat milk. With calcium comes good posture, strong nails, and a pearly white smile (remember, this beneficial nutrient also helps maintain strong enamel for your teeth so they don't decay). Bonus points: add some honey to your yogurt, which also can help prevent acne and serves as another natural skin moisturizer.
5. And finally, the fish
When Self Magazine chose to do a beauty diet in 2006, their motto was "Go Fish." Four years later, salmon, sardines, herring and any other sea swimmer packed with omega 3's are still scaled to boost beauty. These omega-3 fatty acids help improve blood circulation and reduce inflammation, which makes for glowing skin and less wrinkles.
